Electron microscopic localization of Russell bodies in the human plasma cell.

چکیده
Bi, RONALD A. WELSH S INCE originally described in 1890 by \Villiam Russell,’ there has been a gradual accumulation of knowledge concerning Russell body formation by the plasma cell, and yet the exact meaning of these bodies is still not cxplained. Russell bodies can he found in the bone marrow of patients with plasmacytosis due to any cause and are seen often in large numbers within areas of chronic inflammaticn. Russell originally noted the hyaline acidophil bodies in the tissues adjacent to malignant tumors, and termed them the “characteristic organism of cancer.” These bodies have often been considered a form of degeneration of the plasma cell.2 Mere recently Russell bcdies have been identified by histochemistry as a mucoprotein,3 and by fluorescent antibody technics to contain on their surfaces gamma globulin4 and specific antibody.5 The present report describes the electron microscopic localization of Russell bodies in the human plasma cell and sheds light on the cytoarchitectural mechanisms involved, tending to negate the theory that a degenerative

G1 Phase Arrest and Apoptosis Induction in Human Thyroid Cancer Cell Line Thr.C1.PI33 by 3-Hydrogenkwadaphnin Isolated from Dendrostellera lessertii
Dendrostellera lessertii (Thymelaeaceae) is a toxic plant that grows in parts of Iran. The anti-proliferative properties of its crude methanol extract and one of its active components, 3-hydrogenkwadaphnin (3-HK), have been established using several cancer cell lines. Methods: In a further attempt to determine the mode of action, two groups of synchronously growing cells were treated with a sin...
متن کاملUltrastructure of plasma cells containing Russell bodies in human stomach and thyroid.
The fine structure is illustrated of plasma cells containing Russell bodies. The material is from chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates in human gastric mucosa and thyroid glands in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is noted that the Russell bodies lie in distended cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum and are easily distinguished from less electron-dense ;secretory granules' c...
متن کاملLight and electron microscopy on plasma cells and Russell bodies in the iris of a chronic uveitis patient.
Slit-lamp examination of a 56-year-old woman showed many shiny spots in the iris of her right eye which had chronic uveitis and complicated cataract. A piece of iris ioas obtained by iridectomy at the cataract operation and ioas prepared for electron microscopy and studied with both light and electron microscopes. In the light microscopy of thick (2JM) sections stained with Giemsa, numerous pla...
متن کاملMott cell (Russell bodies) Barrett's oesophagitis.
The first case of Barrett's oesophagus with chronic inflammation having predominantly (> 50%) Mott cells, i.e. plasma cells with stored immunoglobulins, known as Russell bodies, is reported. Biopsies from two oesophagoscopies revealed similar changes, suggesting that the predominance of Mott cells is not a fortuitous event but a more long-lasting microscopic process. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) ...
متن کاملA Cytochemical Localization of Reductive Sites in a Gram-negative Bacterium
In order to obtain information on the exact location of the respiratory enzyme chain in Gram-negative bacteria, an electron microscopic study was made of the sites of reducing activity of cells that had, in the living state, incorporated tellurite. In the test object Proteus vulgaris, the reduced tellurite was found to be deposited in bodies contiguous with the plasma membrane but different in ...
